OUR MISSION
Would you believe me if I said there is power in the moments when our minds shut off? Our imagination is a powerful tool for self-discovery, though in our world, including our education environments, we are not often rewarded for venturing deeply inward. In today’s society young people, particularly marginalized populations, are facing higher rates of mental health concerns than ever before.
This course will be rooted in Carl Jung’s healing method called active imagination that offers methods that can be utilized to foster mental wellbeing, harness creativity, and promote problem solving. Using his vast study of symbolism and its connection to images, he came to understand that the unconscious and conscious minds work together to understand your living experience. In this class we will use this method to explore practical application of creative processes, including drawing, sculpting, writing, and movement. In particular, journal writing and affirmation exercises will be a consistent aspect of class. While most journal entries will serve as private outlets for students' expressions, some will be designated as checkpoints for me to better understand you. In addition to hands-on artistic exploration, the class will involve theoretical reading and meditation. This holistic course will foster a stronger mind-body connection, equipping students with tools for emotional expression, coping, and deeper self-understanding. Several guest speakers, practitioners, and activities outside of the classroom will be incorporated.
The classroom conditions should be one that provides a symbiotic relationship for both the student and teacher, where knowledge is exchanged between both parts. The process of active imagination is inherently vulnerable, requiring a supportive and comfortable classroom environment for both students and instructors. It is crucial for all parties involved to feel empowered to explore the potentials of their minds.
